GEO vs SEO: what changes when the answer is written by AI
SEO gets your pages ranked. GEO gets your business named inside an answer. They share most of their foundations, and differ in a few places that change how you write, what you measure and where the budget goes first.
What stays the same between GEO and SEO?
More than most GEO sales pitches admit. An assistant that searches the web before answering needs the same things a search engine needs: pages it is allowed to crawl, pages that are indexed, a site that loads, and content that answers the question better than the alternatives.
Google is explicit about its own AI Overviews and AI Mode. Its documentation says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond the usual SEO fundamentals, and no special files or markup to add (Google Search Central). Other assistants publish less, but the logic holds: if a crawler cannot read a page, no answer will quote it.
So the technical health of your site, your internal links, your structured data and your reputation all count twice. Work done there is never wasted on one side.
GEO and SEO compared, point by point
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What you win | A position in a ranked list of links | A mention, a recommendation or a cited link inside an answer |
| Who decides | A ranking system comparing pages for a query | A model summarising the sources it found and what it already knows |
| Unit of work | The page and the search phrase | The question and the facts about your business |
| Outside signals | Links pointing to your pages | Mentions of your name in the right context, linked or not, plus reviews |
| How the visitor arrives | A click from the results page | A click on a citation, a later search for your name, or a call with no click at all |
| What you report | Rankings, organic clicks, leads | Presence in answers, citations, accuracy, AI referral visits, leads |
What changes in the way you write?
Search pages are often written around a phrase, with a long warm-up before the useful part. A reader scrolls past it. An assistant looking for a sentence to quote does not get that far.
Take a dental implant page. Written the old way, it opens with why a confident smile matters. Written for an assistant, it opens with who the treatment suits, how many visits it takes, and what makes the price go up or down. Both versions can rank. Only the second gives an assistant something to repeat.
The other change is scope. SEO tends to reward one strong page per topic. GEO rewards that too, plus clear answers to the narrow questions buyers ask on the way: can I pay in instalments, is there parking, do you treat children. Those answers can live on the same page, under headings phrased as the questions.
What changes in the way you measure?
SEO reporting is mature. Search Console tells you which queries showed your pages and how many people clicked. GEO reporting has gaps, and you should know where they are before you judge the work.
Google counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the normal Web search data in Search Console, so you cannot separate them there. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot can be spotted by their referrers, and ChatGPT adds a utm_source=chatgpt.com tag to many links. But a lot of AI influence leaves no trace: the person reads the answer, then types your name into Google or calls you directly.
That is why GEO measurement has three parts: a fixed list of questions checked in each assistant every month, AI referral visits in analytics, and a “how did you hear about us” question on your forms. Our guide on tracking AI traffic shows how to set up the second one, and our SEO and AI visibility tracking puts Search Console data and AI visits next to the leads they produced.
Where to spend first
If the budget only covers part of the work, this order gets the most from each step, because the early steps help both SEO and GEO.
Fix crawling and indexing
Make sure Googlebot, Bingbot and the AI crawlers you accept can reach your key pages, and that those pages are indexed. Nothing else works until this does.
Rewrite your money pages answer-first
Start with the pages that bring leads: services, locations, prices. Put the answer in the first lines and the specifics in plain text.
Make your facts agree everywhere
Name, address, phone, hours and services must match on your site, your Google Business Profile and the directories that list you.
Earn reviews and mentions
Reviews and articles on other sites help rankings and give assistants something independent to check your claims against.
Track both, down to the lead
Report organic and AI visits side by side, and follow each to the form, the call and the booking.
Frequently asked questions
Should I stop doing SEO and switch to GEO?
No. The assistants that cite sources mostly find them through search, and Google’s AI features run on Google Search. Dropping SEO would remove the ground GEO stands on. Most businesses need both, with SEO foundations fixed first. Our SEO services page explains what that work covers.
Do AI answers take clicks away from my site?
For simple questions, the answer on the page is often enough and the person does not click. For questions that end in a purchase or a booking, people usually still need to visit a site or call. What changes is that fewer businesses get considered at all, which makes being in the answer matter more.
Do keywords still matter for GEO?
Yes, as a guide to what people ask. But assistants handle questions phrased in full sentences, often with a city, a budget or a constraint. Plan around those full questions, and use the keywords inside them.
Can one page work for both SEO and GEO?
Yes, and it should. A page that answers its question in the first lines, uses headings phrased as questions and states facts plainly is easier for a person to read, easier for Google to rank and easier for an assistant to quote.
Is GEO more expensive than SEO?
It adds work on top of SEO: question tracking across assistants, more rewriting, and outreach for mentions. If your SEO foundations are already sound, the extra cost is smaller. Our GEO pricing guide explains what drives the price.
